The Pastor and the Quran
Sep 10th, '10Bravo to FOX News for their decision to not cover the planned Quran-burning that may still be set for tomorrow. "We do not cover every flag burning that happens in this country. We don't run every hostage tape," Fox News exec Michael Clemente told the Baltimore Sun. Pastor Jones and his outrageous plans, nonetheless, have stirred rage worldwide as he has received endless cable news coverage all week.
The decision for newsrooms to not cover something is always controversial. Reporters make their names by what they cover, not what they choose to omit, so an editorial decision to skip a major event takes some guts.
Sometimes, newsrooms censor what reporters can say. When I was at Reuters, a memo circulated shortly after 9/11 that touched off debate in our newsrooms: we could no longer use the word “terrorist” in our copy. Instead, we had to use “freedom fighter.” This policy held at Reuters for some time. A few years later, FOX News caused a similar controversy with its decision to rename “suicide bombers” with the “homicide bomber” tag.
Whatever the case with Pastor Jones, the major media should shut off his megaphone. He has manipulated the media all week and the continuous coverage from multiple national outlets is endangering the country.
