How Powerful is a Tweet?
Sep 16th, '10Throughout this blog and the industry, the power of tweeting has been debated many times over. But, who would have imagined that this power translates even when one decides to no longer tweet?
On Tuesday, world-famous musician John Mayer decided to pull the plug on his Twitter account, leaving his 3.7 million followers clamoring for an alternative for information about John. To this industry insider, what is really interesting about Mayer's decision is the buzz that has been created around deactivating his account. All across the Internet, story after story informed the universe of this cataclysmic decision. News worthy, maybe -- incredible, for sure!
I’m sure many remember the classic line from the Kevin Costner movie Field of Dreams where voices can be heard coming from the corn fields: “If you build it, they will come.” Well, John Mayer built his Twitter account, his followers came, he fed them interesting updates and content -- and now he’s cut them off. Time will tell if this will have any lasting impact on the artist's album sales or his loyal fan base.
But, the underlying point here is acknowledging the overwhelming power of the tweet. And, one last point -- Mayer's PR team is now directing his 3.7 million followers to his blog for updates about his life, music and where he eats dinner. “Waiting on the World to Change?” It already has...the power of social media lives on!
